7 - The Zone Diet

also known as 40-30-30

Madonna swears by the Zone diet plan, but if she looks great, it’s also because she spends 2 hours working out on those famous dance routines.

But—it’s worth looking into. A few words about the Zone diet: The diet was created by Dr. Barry Sears, who believes that the root of all fat storage (i.e., that flab around your waist) is insulin. Cut down on insulin in the blood stream, and your body’s forced to burn fat.

Sounds like The Atkins Diet?

Not really. Unlike Atkins, he’s not banning carbs, he wants a proportioning of your intake. According to Sears, there’s a “scientifically proven ratio” of Zone food groups that optimizes insulin reduction. That’s 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat (a formula very similar to Scarsdale).

Notice that 30% fat is a little high, which is what concerns cardiologists. If you have heart disease, you may be cutting down weight but wreaking havoc on your cholesterol levels.

The Verdict: A lot of people swear by the Zone, but an equally large number of people think it’s a scam. It’s up to you to give it a try and see if it works for you—assuming you have the patience for all that proportioning. It’s hard enough to count calories, but to have to count groups of calories is a little too much for those who don’t have personal dietitians. (Of course, if Madonna wants to lend us hers..)

Feedback: “I like the way it lets you have a little bit of everything, because I really can’t give up carbs completely. But I didn’t lose as much weight as I expected, given all the trouble it took. It wasn’t bad, but I ended up trying something else.” – Karen, (STATE)
